Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Idaho Steelheads scored with just 5:08 remaining in regulation to sneak out a 2-1 victory over the Bakersfield Condors Saturday afternoon in front of 4,713 at Rabobank Arena in downtown Bakersfield.
Just 14 hours removed from their first meeting with Idaho this weekend, the Condors (8-18-6, 22 points) and Steelheads (17-11-7, 41 points) took some time to get moving. Bakersfield drew three power plays in the opening frame and used one to get the first tally of the game. Mark Derlago finished off some nice passing with the man advantage, and knocked in his eighth of the season at 11:06 to make it 1-0 Condors. They took a 13-8 lead in shots into the intermission as well.
The Steelheads rallied in the second, outshooting the Condors 15-7 in the frame. They got on the board at 9:22 of the period, with Taggart Desmet evening the score. Yutaka Fukufuji was sharp, making saves through several goalmouth scrambles and a pair of Steelheads power plays, keeping it 1-1 after 40 minutes.
It was late in the third before either team could light the lamp again, and Blake Forsythe finished off a 2-on-1 to notch the game winner at 14:52. The Condors continued to pressure, but two scoring chances in the waning minutes rang off the posts, and they could not get the equalizer.
Notes: LW Brett Lutes returned to the lineup tonight after being activated from the 7-day IR today. He assisted on the Condors first period tally. The Condors added G Michel Robinson to the roster today. He backed up Fukufuji in the game.
The Condors will take on the Thunder tomorrow in Stockton at 4 p.m. Be sure to tune into KGEO AM1230 at 3:50 for Condors Countdown before the 4 p.m. opening face off.
Bakersfield will be back in The Nest on Tuesday, Jan. 8 for a game against the Phoenix RoadRunners. The Condors will be celebrating Elvis' birthday at the arena, so fans dressing up like Elvis will receive $1.00 admission and be invited to take part in an Elvis impersonators contest.
It will also be a CW Bakersfield & 106.1 KRAB Radio High School/College ID Night, where all college and high school students receive admission for $1.00 by presenting their student ID.
In addition, Tuesday is a Mercy & Memorial Hospitals & ARRC Technology T.H.I.N.K. Night. The Turn Hockey Into New Knowledge program allows students to earn terrace tickets to tonight's game through exceptional performance.
