Trenton Devils News Release
PENSACOLA, FL - On any given night 41 saves on 42 shots by Trenton netminder Jason Smith would be the lead story, but Brad Mills gained a share of the limelight with a natural hat trick as the Devils dominated forward and back, defeating Pensacola 3-1.
Smith stopped 14 shots in the first period, keeping Trenton in the game until Mills could take over. Taking a faceoff in the Ice Pilots' zone, Mills won the puck back to Stephen Rooney, who fired a hard slapper from the top point. The center from Olds, AB, set up in front of the net, slammed down with perfect timing on the puck, deflecting it past Cam Ellsworth and into the goal 4:16 into the second.
Mills would follow up that goal with his second tally 13:38 into the middle frame, stuffing the puck through the legs of the embattled Pensacola netminder. Assisted by Matt Rogers and Colin Pepperall, Mills swung around the far side of the net and pushed the puck in the five-hole, where it trickled between Ellsworth's pads and barely made it across the line.
The rookie center would finally cement the Devils score 4:10 into the third period, taking a feed from Stephen Wood near the top dot and wristing the puck into the top right shelf.
Mills earned his second hat trick of the season; he notched his first one on 12/27/07 against Johnstown in his second game back from the IR.
Smith was outstanding, as well, continuing his strong play of the past two games with 52 minutes of shutout defense. The Quebecois netminder made several spectacular stops, dropping down multiple times to seal off second-chances. In the end only a shorthand goal by Erik Fabian would beat the Devils goaltender.
Smith earned his fifth win of the season, and has a goals against average under 1.00 over his past three games.
The Trenton Devils finish up their southern road trip with a tilt against the Mississippi Sea Wolves on January 5th at 6:05pm CST at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Tune into WTSR 91.3 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
