South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Estero, FL - Mike Gabinet got his first goal of the season for the South Carolina Stingrays in the third period, but it was too little too late, as the hard charging Everblades overtook the Rays 7-2 at Germain Arena on Saturday night.
"We really didn't come out to play in the first period," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "When you're down only 15 or 16 skaters and you don't come out playing your best, you can expect what we got here tonight; a good butt whooping."
The Florida Everblades scored early and often in the first period, as they came out flying against South Carolina. Florida had four first period goals, including taking the lead at 1:50, a lead they would never relinquish.
The second period didn't turn out much better, though the Rays certainly played with more spirit in that period. Two more goals hit the back of the net, and after 40 minutes of play the Everblades had a 6-0 lead.
In the third period Bednar chose to relieve goaltender Josh Johnson and put in recently signed Jay Chrapala. Chrapala gave up one goal in the period, but the Rays got on the board and scored two of their own. Chris Chaput got his 10th goal of the season, a power play goal from Gabinet and Travis Morin at 2:01. That made the game 6-1. Later in the game, at 8:07 Gabinet got his first goal of the season from Pierre-Luc O'Brien to make it 72, the eventual final. The assist by O'Brien was his 10th in the last eight games, including getting at least one in all of those games.
The winning goaltender was Justin Peters who stopped 30 of the 32 shots that he faced. The losing goaltender was Johnson who stopped 11 of the 17 shots that he faced. Chrapala who stayed Johnson in the third period stopped 11 of the 12 shots that he faced.
"It was tough and will continue to be tough for us on this road trip," said Bednar. "But these things happen. It'll turn around for us soon."
The Rays are back in action Monday night when they take on the Pensacola Ice Pilots in Pensacola, FL. Game time will be at 8:05 Eastern time.
