Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 5, 2008) - The Columbia Inferno (13-15-4-4, 34 points) used defense and a strong performance from goaltender Jeff Jakaitis to defeat the visiting Augusta Lynx (18-13-0-3, 39 points) 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Steve McJannet put the Inferno up 1-0 with about five minutes left when, while on a 2-on-1 breakaway, he slipped a Jeremy Hall rebound past J.P. Levasseur's blocker-side post.
Owen Fussey's ninth of the year doubled the Inferno's lead less than a minute into the second period. Fussey was alone in the low slot and wristed a shot past Levasseur. Jakaitis stopped all 14 shots he faced in the period as he continued to frustrate the Augusta shooters. Those emotions boiled over when Inferno defenseman Tyson Marsh and Lynx winger Bobby Bolt squared off in a particularly violent fight late in the second.
Jakaitis and the Inferno nursed the goalie's shutout late into the third period, but Lynx center Igor Pohanka snapped the netminder's spell with less than six minutes left in the game. Pohanka was able to skate into the slot with little pressure and he beat Jakaitis with a stiff wrister to cut the Inferno's lead in half. Columbia stood tall, however, and captain Brad Ralph sealed the game when his clearing attempt from the near boards bounced off the glass, down the length of the ice, and into the empty net at 19:18.
Levasseur finished with 34 saves on 36 shots, while Jakaitis turned aside 25 of 26.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 12 to host the Florida Everblades at 1:05 p.m. Season tickets, group tickets, fundraisers and the coolest birthday parties in town are all available by calling 803.256.7825 or by logging on to columbiainferno.com.
