Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Wheeling, WV - The Johnstown Chiefs were unable to win back-to-back games for the first time since November 21 and 23 as a result of a 3-2 loss to the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team was able to score in the first period, but Kris Kasper came the closest as he had a shot clang off of the crossbar behind Wheeling's starting goalie Curtis Darling.

Todd Spencer's goal at 9:54 of the second period gave Wheeling a 1-0 lead. The goal was Spencer's first as a professional, and the Nailers' first score against the Chiefs in a span of 74 minutes and 25 seconds, going back to their goal at 17:31 of the first period on Friday.

In the third period Wheeling got six successive power plays, and cashed in on two of them to pave the way for the victory. Sean Collins netted both Nailer goals, the first when he banked a centering pass off of a skate in front of Mike Brown for a 2-0 advantage.

The Chiefs answered back emphatically with goals by Joey Olson and Tyler Hirsch to even the score at 2.

Olson took a cross-ice pass from Rob Drummond and slid it safely into the back of the cage, and Hirsch scored on a break away after he stole the puck at the Wheeling blue line.

Collins, though, found a loose puck at the top of Brown's crease thanks to a Jon D'Aversa shot, and tucked it in for the final score.

Brown played a strong game with 36 saves on 39 Wheeling shots. The Johnstown power play was kept off the board, going 0-for-4.

The Chiefs' next home game is on Saturday January, 18 against the Dayton Bombers. That night the Chiefs will present a guaranteed win night, where if the Chiefs lose, each fan will get a free voucher to a future Chiefs' game.
