Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Marty Flichel scored the game winning, power play goal just 36 seconds in overtime to boost the Steelheads past the Las Vegas Wranglers, 5-4 in front of 3,434 fans at Qwest Arena on Wednesday night.

The come-from-behind victory improves the Steelheads (26-18-2-1) to 12-9-1-1 on home ice and 4-2 in overtime, as they've now won two straight contests. The loss sends the Wranglers (27-9-6-6) to their sixth defeat in overtime, while they remain unbeaten in their last seven outings.

On a two-man advantage in the extra session, Flichel took a feed from defenseman Darrell Hay an rifled a one-timer from the top of the left circles over the glove of Wranglers' goaltender Marc Magliarditi (19 saves) to send the home crowd into hysteria.

The game was sent to overtime however, only because of some last minutes heroics by the Steelheads. After the Wranglers took a 4-3 lead at 15:51 of the third, the Steelheads evened up the tilt on the power play at 17:15. Second-year winger Derek Nesbitt grabbed a loose puck at the bottom of the right circles and blasted a laser into the top shelf and past Magliarditi for his 18th. J.B. Bittner and Flichel recorded the assists on the marker that forced overtime.

Approaching the midway point of the first period, Lance Galbraith broke the ice with an even-strength goal at 7:36 to put the Steelheads in front 1-0. Galbraith collected a rebound off Nesbitt's initial shot and he ripped the puck past Magliarditi for his 19th of the campaign. Flichel grabbed the second assist.

Just 25 seconds later the Wranglers responded on Arpad Mihaly's 18th of the season. With the Steelheads failing to clear their defensive zone, Mihaly took a pass from Derek Edwardson and he picked the top right corner of the net, beating Steve Silverthorn (23 saves).

The Wranglers gained their first lead of the contest at the 12:34 mark on an individual effort by Kelly Czuy. Carrying the puck into the Steelheads zone along the left wing side, Czuy beat Steelheads' defenseman Kyle Peto before cutting out to the top of the crease and flipping the puck over Silverthorn and into the top shelf. Ryan Donally and Joe Tallari set up his eighth of the season.

After one period the Wranglers led 2-1, while out-shooting the Steelheads 12-7.

In the second period the Steelheads potted the only two goals. At 4:19, Flichel registered his team-leading 23rd of the season to even the match at two. On the play, Galbraith chipped the puck loose in neutral ice for Nesbitt who feathered a pass to Flichel at the left circles of the Wranglers' zone, and he redirected it over Magliarditi.

The Steelheads took a 3-2 lead at 8:11 of the stanza on Taggart Desmet's shot from the right wing boards that skipped off Magliarditi and into the back of the net. Defensemen Travis Wight and Steve Chabbert notched the assists. Chabbert's assist was his first point with the Steelheads.

Entering the third period, the Steelheads led 3-2.

Sixty-two seconds into the final frame, Edwardson netted a power play goal with assists going to Mihaly and Steve Crampton to tie the contest at three. Then, after the Wranglers took a 4-3 lead at 15:51 on Mihaly's second of the night, the Steelheads answered with Nesbitt's man advantage marker. Edwardson and Crampton got the helpers.

The final shots favored the Wranglers, 27-24. Flichel's second game-winner of the season helped Silverthorn snag his 22nd win, while Magliarditi drops to 3-0-1-0 on the year. The Steelheads ended the night at two-for-five on the power play while the Wranglers went one-for-six.

The Steelheads three-game series with the Wranglers continues on Friday, February 16. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
