RoadRunners' Demianiuk Leads The Fight Against Spit Tobacco
February 14, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Phoenix RoadRunners News Release
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Phoenix RoadRunners defenseman and alternate captain Dusty Demianiuk has teamed up with the Arizona Department of Health Services Tobacco Education and Prevention Program to lead this year's "Through with Chew Week", a week-long effort to build awareness about the dangers of smokeless tobacco, and to help smokeless tobacco users quit dipping and chewing for good.
"Through with Chew Week" will run from Feb. 18-24, but it will actually kick off this Friday with the second annual "Through with Chew Night at the RoadRunners" at US Airways Center when Phoenix welcomes the defending Kelly Cup Champion Alaska Aces at 7:11 p.m. The first 2,000 fans 14-and-under will receive a life-size growth poster of Demianiuk.
"As a professional athlete, to be able to perform at the highest level every single night begins with living a healthy lifestyle," said Demianiuk. "Spit tobacco and all forms nicotine for that matter will only prevent you from reaching whatever your ultimate goals may be, whether it's winning a championship or simply living a long and safe life. I'm happy to work with the Arizona Department of Health Services to promote this important message, and hopefully steer kids away from using spit tobacco and other forms of nicotine in the future."
Demianiuk will present a personal story to area schools in a special assembly at US Airways Center on Feb. 22, and his message will be featured at all Phoenix RoadRunners home games, during RoadRunners' game broadcasts, and at www.phxroadrunners.com through the conclusion of the season.
Demianiuk, 24, is in his second season with the RoadRunners following a four-year collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The Franklin, Mass. native was named the team's alternate captain prior to the start of the regular season.
Phoenix returns to US Airways Center at 7:11 p.m. Friday as they host the Alaska Aces in the opening game of a two-game set. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
Individual game ticket for the 2006-07 regular season start as low $7 in the lower section and can be purchased at the US Airways Center Box Office and at all Ticketmaster outlets including Ticketmaster.com. Information on season tickets, half-season packages, and flex plans are available by calling (602) 462-GOAL.
