Alaska Aces News Release
LAS VEGAS - Aki Seitsonen snapped a 2-2 tie with 12 minutes remaining to propel Las Vegas to its fourth straight victory over Alaska, 4-2, in front of 4,155 Tuesday night at Orleans Arena.
The Aces had won five straight, 10 of their last 11, and 16 of their previous 18 games entering Tuesday's contest at the home of the Wranglers, a team that had swept Alaska in a three-game series back in Anchorage in mid-November and boasted a four-game winning streak of their own coming into the game.
After a crisp 10 minutes, Alaska got the game's first break, as a broken play led to the game's first goal, a wrist shot top shelf off the stick of Joe Talbot at 11:11, his 12th in 24 games played this season. Marco Peluso tied the game three minutes later, but Mike Scott (named ECHL Player of the Week today) tipped in a drive from the point by Patrick Wellar with three seconds left in the first period, giving the Aces a 2-1 edge at the break.
Alaska had lost just three games all year long when scoring first and only two when leading after the opening 20 minutes, but Vegas forged a 2-2 tie on Steve Crampton's power play goal at 11:55 of the second period. In the third, the Aces out-shot the Wranglers 14-7 but fell behind for the first time when Seitsonen rifled a rebound of a Peluso slap shot over Derek Gustafson's shoulder for a 3-2 lead. Gustafson, the reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Week who lost for only the second time in his last 15 starts and only the third in his previous 21, could only watch helplessly from the bench as Ryan Donally sealed the Vegas win with an empty-netter in the game's final minute.
Alaska (35-13-2) will take tomorrow off, practice Thursday in Las Vegas, and then head to Phoenix for three more games against the RoadRunners, beginning Friday at 5:11 p.m. AST, with live coverage beginning at 4:50 p.m. on the flagship home of Alaska Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM. The Aces, who swept Phoenix last weekend in Anchorage by a combined score of 17-4, play the 'Runners again Saturday at 5:11 p.m. AST and Tuesday, February 20, at 5:11 p.m. AST.
