Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Boise, ID - The Las Vegas Wranglers (27-9-12, 66 points) were defeated by the Idaho Steelheads (26-18-3, 55 points) 5-4 in overtime at the Qwest Arena on Tuesday night. Idaho's Marty Flichel scored his second goal of the night just 36-seconds into overtime to give the Steelheads the win. Las Vegas goalie Marc Magliarditi stopped 23 of 28 Steelheads shots in the loss. Despite Arpad Mihaly, Derek Edwardson and Steve Crampton combining for three goals and five assists, the Wranglers saw their five-game winning streak snapped. Rookie Kelly Czuy also scored as the Wranglers fell to 5-0-1 in their last six games played. Idaho's scoring line of Lance Galbraith, Derek Nesbitt and Marty Flichel combined for four goals and five assists. The Wranglers fell to 1-6 in overtimes this season. Las Vegas will stay in Idaho for a 6:10 pm (PST) face-off on Friday and Saturday at Qwest Arena.
In the first period, Idaho scored the first tally of the night as Lance Galbraith netted his 19th goal of the season at 7:36, giving the Steelheads a 1-0 lead. Las Vegas answered back just 25-seconds later when Arpad Mihaly netted his 18th goal of the season, just his second with the Wranglers in only his seventh game with the team. Mihaly's shot was a one-timer set up by Derek Edwardson at 8:01. Rookie Kelly Czuy scored his first goal in 12-games at 12:34, breaking the 1-1 tie and putting Las Vegas in front 2-1 after one period of play.
In the second period, the Steelheads charged back with two goals in the first eight minutes of the middle period. The first off the stick of leading scorer Marty Flichel at 4:19 and the second from Taggert Desmet at 8:01. Flichel capped off a nice pass from Derek Nesbitt with a redirection for his 23rd of the season. Desmet snapped a shot from the right-wing boards that deflected in off the pads of goalie Marc Magliarditi for the 3-2 lead.
In the third period, Las Vegas took advantage of their fifth power play of the night with Derek Edwardson snagging his 16th goal of the season just 1:02 into the final period. Arpad Mihaly and Steve Crampton worked the puck down low to Edwardson who tied the game 3-3. Mihaly scored his second of the night and 19th of the season at 15:51 to give Las Vegas a 4-3 lead. Mihaly's goal was set up by Crampton and Edwardson. The Steelheads scored a power-play goal with 2:45 remaining in the game as Derek Nesbitt scored his 18th of the season, sending the game to overtime tied 4-4.
The Steelheads made quick work in the extra frame with the Wranglers attempting to kill off a 5-on-3 Idaho power play. Magliarditi and defenseman Aaron Power both earned minor penalties just 15-seconds apart to end the third period, setting up the Steelheads power play in overtime. Idaho scored 36-seconds in when Flichel cranked a one-timer in the upper right-hand corner of the Las Vegas net for the 5-4 final. The game marked the third straight contest Las Vegas and Idaho went to overtime.
Las Vegas will return home on Tuesday, February 27th to host Idaho at 7:05 pm.
