Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Good baseball teams will have off-nights. Thursday night was one for the Goldeyes.

Great baseball teams shake off those off-nights and perform like they never happened.

That's exactly what the Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-22) did Friday as they pounded the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants (26-33) 18-1 in front of 5,564 eager fans at Shaw Park.

It was total domination throughout for the Goldeyes, with both the pitching and batting firing on all cylinders. Highlighting the win was recent American Association Pitcher of the Week Ace Walker, who earned his seventh win of the season with a masterful complete game. He allowed just six hits, one run, and struck out five as he pitched his second start-to-finish game of the season. Walker is now just one win shy of Rafael Gross for the Goldeyes career record for most wins by a pitcher.

"It's amazing how well this game works when you throw it over the plate," said field manager Rick Forney. "(Ace) threw strikes, showed command of the ball, and mixed in his secondary stuff and certainly gave us what we needed today."

The batting was superb as well, as the Fish set season-highs for runs (18) and hits (20) as every player recorded at least one hit. Jon Weber, Kody Kaiser, and rookie Ridge Carpenter all recorded four RBI on the night and Price Kendall had a standout performance, going 4 for 5 with two runs scored.

"I don't think anyone expected a bounce back like this," said Forney. "But this was a great game, with contributions from everyone."

Sioux Falls didn't do themselves any favours, committing four errors on the game. Starting pitcher Adam Cowart gave up 10 runs - eight of them earned - on 10 hits and lasted just three innings. Four pitchers came to the plate for the Pheasants, but none were effective as the Fish scored runs in all but two innings.

After splitting the first two games, the Goldeyes will now look to win the four-game series with two weekend wins on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Saturday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m. and lefty Mike Williams will start for Winnipeg.

Great seats to that and all Goldeyes games are available by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, clicking ticketmaster.ca, or by visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, including the one inside Shaw Park.
