Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts posted their third consecutive shutout, and fourth in the last five games, beating the Grand Prairie AirHogs 5-0 at QuikTrip Park on Friday night.
Ryan Hinson continued the Wingnuts' recent trend of outstanding starting pitching, limiting the AirHogs to just four hits over seven full innings. Hinson walked three and struck out six while earning his seventh win of the season. It is the first time the Wingnuts have ever pitched three consecutive shutouts.
The Wingnuts scored three times in the top of the first to give Hinson early support. With two outs and no one on base, Brent Clevlen walked and took third on Juan Richardson's single to right. Jorge Delgado plated Clevlen with a line drive single to left. Josh Workman made it 2-0, pulling a single into right field. Rookie right fielder Peter Barrows capped off the rally with an RBI single to center field in his first professional at bat that brought in Delgado from third base. Barrows finished the night 2 for 4 with a walk, RBI, and stolen base.
The Wingnuts extended the lead in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Mike Conroy ripped a single down the right field line that scored Edwin Bellorin and Josh Horn to make it 5-0.
Hinson worked around Grand Prairie's only scoring threat in the bottom of the inning. The AirHogs loaded the bases with two outs, but Hinson induced an inning-ending flyout to right from David Thomas.
Kendy Batista worked a scoreless eighth inning while Jared Simon tossed a perfect ninth to wrap up the Wingnuts' league-leading ninth shutout of the season. The Wingnuts' pitching staff did not allow a runner past first base after the fourth inning.
Lance Janke started for the AirHogs and took the loss. Janke allowed five earned runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out five.
Barrows was signed before the game. The Old Saybrook, CT native recently finished his college career at the University of Bridgeport where he hit .353 with 31 RBI and 21 stolen bases. Barrows most recently played in the collegiate wood bat summer MINK League, hitting .404 with eight home runs and 44 RBI in 35 games for the Nevada Griffons.
The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with Chad Sherman taking on right-hander John Brownell. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
The Wingnuts return home on Friday, August 22nd when they host the El Paso Diablos. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
