X's Squander 8 Run Lead, Fall To Saints 13-11

X'S SQUANDER 8 RUN LEAD, FALL TO SAINTS 13-11 Sioux City-----The Explorers had a 10-2 lead after four innings, but blew the big lead in a 13-11 loss to the St. Paul Saints here Thursday.

Behind the big bat of Ray Serrano, the Explorers had a 10-2 lead in the fourth, as Serrano had two home runs, a three-run home run in the first inning and a grand slam shot in the fourth. Serrano finished the game with eight RBI's, one short of the league record of nine. However, it was St. Paul that would club three home runs, the three-run home run by Jason Cooper in the seventh that gave the Saints a 13-10 lead. The Cooper blast and a solo shot by Jonathan Van Every, his 14th of the season, came off losing relief pitcher Cephas Howard. Kyle Wright started the game for the Explorers and had a 10-5 lead when he left the game after five innings. Matt Gibbs pitched the sixth, but gave up three runs before Howard came into pitch the seventh.

The bright spot pitching for the Explorers was Andrew Snowden pitched the final two innings and struck out five of the six hitters he faced. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for St. Paul. The second game of the four-game series will be Friday at 7:05 at Lewis and Clark Park.
