SHREVEPORT, La. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats jumped out of the gates in posting an 8-2 victory over the Shreveport-Bossier Captains in the opener of a six-game roadtrip on Friday night.

The RailCats were able to score a run in the first inning for the seventh consecutive contest, taking advantage of some early mistakes by Shreveport-Bossier starter Osvaldo Rodriguez. Mike Massaro drew a one-out walk and Brad Boyer followed with a single. Cristian Guerrero opened the scoring by driving home his 52nd run of the year with a single through the left side.

Three more runs came home in the top of the second to extend the lead to 4-0. The RailCats managed just one hit in the frame but used two walks, two wild pitches, and a passed ball to build on the edge. Shreveport-Bossier scored in the bottom of the third on a groundout before the RailCats added three more in the fourth. Mike Rohde and Craig Maddox posted back to back singles to open the inning before Massaro tripled both home with his ninth of the season, matching Anthony Iapoce's single season record from 2005. Massaro trotted in moments later on a double from Boyer, who owns hits in 16 of the last 17 contests.

The Captains cut into the lead with a solo homer from designated hitter Palmer Karr, Jr. in the bottom of the sixth, but Kyle Haines again distanced the lead to 8-2 with his first homer of the year leading off the seventh.

Carlos Rivas tossed five innings to collect his third win in four starts since returning from the disabled list. Brian Grening, James Baker, and Jeremy Hauer combined to finish off the win. Every member of the lineup posted a hit for the RailCats. Boyer finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Maddox, Haines, and Guerrero logged two each as well. The contest was the first matchup ever between the two clubs, and the RailCats first venture into the South Division since the first series of the year.

The series continues tomorrow with RHP Scott Shaw (6-3, 5.17) toeing the rubber for the RailCats. Shreveport-Boosier, 2010 American Association Champs, will counter with LHP Ryan DiPetro (8-2, 4.58).
