Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---The Captains were defeated in their first meeting of the year with the Gary SouthShore Rail Cats at Fair Grounds Field 8-2 Friday night, behind a strong starting performance by Rail Cats pitcher Carlos Rivas (3-0). Shreveport-Bossier was handed their third straight loss and fell to three games below .500 for the first time this season.
Palmer Karr Jr.'s sixth inning solo home run deep over the left field fence was one of the few bright spots for the Captains as Osvaldo Rodriguez (3-4) was tagged for seven runs (six earned) and 11 hits over 5.2 innings. Rodriguez did strike out nine batters, tying his own team-high for the year. He walked four and threw two wild pitches.
Gary SouthShore scored in the top of the first when Christian Guerrero's single scored Mike Massaro. Shreveport-Bossier did catch two Rail Cats hitters stealing in the inning. Catcher Brian Peterson threw out Lorenzo Scott at second base and Rodriguez caught Brad Boyer heading for third.
In the second, the Rail Cats plated three runs on just one hit, as two wild pitches and a passed ball allowed runs to come across and Gary SouthShore took a 4-0 lead.
The Captains got one back in the third when newly-acquired Scott Thomas reached on a walk and took second on Bryan Frichter's single. Thomas tagged and went to third on Alex Cowart's fly outm then scored on a Robert Perry grounder to short.
Yet Gary SouthShore would pile on again in the fourrth when Massaro hit a two-out triple, scoring Mike Rhode and Craig Maddux, each of whom had singled earlier in the inning. A double by Boyer would plate Massaro and make it 7-1. Karr Jr.'s home run cut it to 7-2 but the Rail Cats got the run back in the top of the seventh on a home run of their own, a solo shot to right by Kyle Haines off Captains reliever Jake McCarter. It was Haines' first long ball of the year.
Boyer went 3-for-5 for Gary SouthShore, picking up two doubles and an RBI. Massaro was 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Haines went 2-for-4 with a double and the home run. For Shreveport-Bossier, only Karr (walk, home run) and Perry (single, walk) reached base multiple times.
The Rail Cats bullpen struck out four and allowed one run over four innings. Shreveport-Bossier's pen was solid too, going 3.1 innings and also allowing only one run. Captains outfielder Alex Cowart pitched a scoreless ninth, getting Chris Carrara to foul out with the bases loaded. It marked the fourth straight time Cowart has thrown a scoreless inning.
Shreveport-Bossier has now scored just two runs in their last three games and have now lost 10 of their last 12 games, falling to 28-31. The Captains play game two of their series with Gary SouthShore Saturday night as Ryan DiPietro (8-2, 4.58) faces righthander Scott Shaw (6-3, 5.17) on Academy Sports & Outdoors Night/Captains Youth Clinic at Academy Sports' Bossier location.
