WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants threw some cold water on the red-hot Winnipeg Goldeyes Thursday night and reminded the division leaders they are still in the playoff race yet.

Winnipeg returned home from a 7-1 road trip only to watch the Pheasants explode for a 17-7 rout in the opener of the four-game series. The Pheasants have won three in a row.

The Pheasants' grit was on display in the three-hour-and-49-minute marathon. Twice they battled back from four-run deficits, including a 4-0 margin after the first inning. Down 7-3 in the sixth inning, the Pheasants rallied for five runs by sending nine men to the plate. Kevin Carby drove in two with a bases-loaded single and Hunter Jobes scored on a wild pitch. Trevor Lawhorn then singled up the middle to score Carby and tie the game. Reggie Abercrombie followed with a flare caught in the infield, but a subsequent throwing error in attempt to double off Lawhorn allowed Anthonsen to score the go-ahead run.

The Pheasants scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings before putting the game well out of reach with a seven-run ninth inning.

Francisco Leandro led the Pheasants effort, going 4-for-5 with a double and triple and five RBI. Every plate appearance was productive; he chipped in a sacrifice bunt and his groundout in the second brought in a run. Leandro is second on the team with 41 RBI.

Abercrombie went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and sacrifice fly. He has eight home runs for the year.

Barry Fowler (4-2) earned the victory against his former team from this season. He gave up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits in five innings. Fowler is 4-1 with Sioux Falls. Chad Benefield (0-1) took the loss in relief for Winnipeg.

The Pheasants' record climbed to 26-32, 10 games behind first-place Winnipeg in the North Division.

The series continues at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, July 15 in Winnipeg. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
