Rapid City Rush News Release

(Tulsa, OK) - A night after having their winning streak stopped at ten games, the Rapid City Rush bounced right back with a convincing 6-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers. The victory was the 200th for Rush Head Coach Joe Ferras. The win also marks the first of the season for the Rush at the BOK Center and their eleventh win in the last twelve contests. Rapid City received two-goal efforts from both Brendan Cook and Jon Pelle while Miguel Beaudry made 21 saves for his eighth win of the season. Rapid City is now 11-1-1 in their last thirteen contests.

Rapid City came flying out of the gate, led by their player/assistant Brendan Cook who scored two goals in the opening four minutes. Cook scored his first at 1:36 when a cycle in the corner led to a turnaround shot from the right faceoff dot that beat Trevor Cann to make it 1-0. The goal was assisted by fellow Bemidji State University products Luke Erickson and Blaine Jarvis. Then at 3:51, Cook would send home a rebound for his team-leading 14th of the season to make it 2-0. The play was set up by Jarvis who forced the puck free behind the net and had two shots hit the post, the second finding way to Cook who sent it home. Finally, towards the end of the period, the Rapid City's Jon Pelle capitalized on a 5-on-3 powerplay chance set up by Jamie VanderVeeken. Rich Hansen found VanderVeeken at the point who then fired a cross-corner pass to Pelle who snuck a shot in to make it 3-0 heading into the first intermission.

The momentum would carry over into the second as Rapid City would increase their lead just 41 seconds in. The Rush were on another 5-on-3 powerplay, and once again it was Pelle, this time from Reaney and VanderVeeken. VanderVeeken slid the puck to Reaney at the bottom of the right circle and his pass to the side of the net found Pelle who banked it off the netminder for the 4-0 lead. Shortly thereafter, Rob Hisey was awarded a penalty shot after a Rush player closed his hand on the puck in the crease. Hisey, who was awarded the first penalty shot of the season against the Rush, was stopped by Miguel Beaudry who poked the puck away before a shot was taken. Late in the period, the Rush gained their third 2-man advantage of the contest, and for the third time, converted on the chance. This time it was VanderVeeken getting the goal as Hansen slid the puck to the defenseman who sent a slapshot past Cann to make it 5-0. Just 56 second later, the Oilers would get on the board when Rob Hisey scored his team-leading 17th of the season to make it 5-1. Hisey's shorthanded goal was his league-leading 5th of the season and was the 3rd shorthanded goal given up by the Rush.

In the third, Scott Wray celebrated his birthday with an even-strength goal at the 6:52 mark. Reaney gained the offensive end and sent a back hand pass across the zone that led to a partial-break for Wray who buried the puck short-side. Late in the period, Rob Hisey would collect his second of the game when he sent a waist-high pass in front that was deflected in by a Rush player, making it a 6-2 final.

Rapid City scored three 5-on-3 goals and ended up 3-for-10 on the powerplay while holding the Oilers scoreless on their five chances.

The Rush now head home to clash with the Colorado Eagles on Tuesday, December 22nd, scheduled for 6:35pm.
