
Odessa slips past Americans 3-2 in OT

ALLEN, Texas - The Allen Americans dropped one to the Odessa Jackalopes tonight 3-2 in overtime in a matchup featuring the first and second place teams. The Americans' record is now 17-5-2 (36 points), and Allen trails Odessa by five points.
Britt Dougherty entertained fans four minutes in to the game when he skated circles around Odessa's Garrett Gruenke before taking him to the ice. Then, Liam Huculak and Michael Grenzy had to finish some business six minutes later when the two went dropped the gloves and received five minutes each for fighting. With both goalies making outstanding saves, the period looked like it might end in a scoreless tie, but Jeff Pierce grabbed the lone goal of the opening frame at 13:58. Allen headed into the locker room down by one.
Teddy bears rained from the stands in the second period. Bruce Graham scored his twelfth goal of the season at 3:59, and fans immediately starting throwing teddy bears on the ice in the Americans first ever Teddy Bear Toss. The new stuffed animals were collected and will be donated to a charity.
The third period was full of more exciting hockey. Tyler Wooddisse gave the Americans a 2-1 lead at 7:30 in the third on the power play, but Odessa tied the score with 48 seconds left off a goal from Mike Ramsay when the extra attacker was on the ice for Odessa.
The game looked like it might go to a shootout, but Alex Dunn found the back of the net at 3:53 in overtime.
Chris Whitley looked superb in net, making 36 saves.
The Americans continue their home-and-home series with Odessa tomorrow night as they take on the Jackalopes at the Ector County Coliseum at 7:05 p.m.
The next home game is the first contest in the Vintage Series with the Texas Brahmas Dec. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Allen Event Center. The Americans will don Dallas Blackhawks jerseys, and the Brahmas will wear Fort Worth Wings sweaters in a night commemorating DFW's minor league hockey rivalries of the old days. Allen then hosts Bossier-Shreveport at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 27.
