Rapid City Rush News Release
(Southaven, MS) - The Rapid City Rush win streak was finally snapped on Friday night as the Mississippi RiverKings came away with a 4-3 win. The game featured a combined 64 penalty minutes and 17 powerplay chances.
Rapid City got the scoring underway on their first powerplay chance of the game just 3:50 into the contest. Dave Grimson sent a pass along the blue line to Jamie VanderVeeken who found Derek LeBlanc in the high slot for the powerplay marker. Not to be outdone, the RiverKings would answer back, scoring on their first powerplay of the game. RiverKings captain Derek Landmesser fired a shot from the point that found its way through a screen to make it 1-1. Shortly thereafter, Rush goaltender Miguel Beaudry stepped in as Danny Battochio took a slash to the facemask that forced him out of the game. Mississippi would then take their first lead of the game off of a goal from Kevin Cooper with Matt Pierce and Steve Makway assisting on the 4-on-4 goal. Rapid City's Jon Pelle would come right back just 33 seconds later. VanderVeeken sent a headman pass that sprung Pelle on a breakaway that he fired in for the equalizer. Heading into the first intermission, the two teams were tied at 2 despite the shots favoring Mississippi 12-3.
The RiverKings also made a goaltender swap as Kevin Beech was replaced by Ian Keserich. The second period would feature only one goal and it came off of the stick of Louis Dumont near the midway point. With a player fresh out of the penalty box, the RiverKings found themselves on an odd-man rush and Dumont capitalized with slapshot to the top left corner to make it 3-2.
It would take over twenty-five minutes for the game's next goal to be scored and it was Mississippi that would take the first two-goal lead. Matt Pierce would take advantage of a Rush defensive zone miscue and bury the puck to make it 4-2. Just over a minute later, Blaine Jarvis would make it a contest as his shot through a screen cut the lead in half. Jarvis netted his fifth goal, but it was too little too late as Mississippi held on for the 4-3 win.
The Rush now head to Tulsa for a game tomorrow, December, 19th at 6:35pm MST.
