Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs topped the Wichita Thunder for the second consecutive night Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum, winning 3-2 to extend their win streak to five games. The âBugs have now beaten the Thunder 12 straight times during the regular season.
Joe Ori scored the game-winning goal at 10:18 the third period and added an assist in the contest. Dave Pszenyczny and Mark Johnson scored the other goals as the âBugs improved to 14-10-0 on the year.
Although the Mudbugs outshot Wichita 11-4 in the first period, it was the Thunder who took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. Brent Ottman got a pass from Jay Henderson and skated into the low circle before beating Ken Carroll with a nice shot over his right shoulder to put the Thunder on top. Brett Smith had the Mudbugs' best scoring chance of the period, but was stopped by former teammate Jon Horrell during a 2-on-1 shorthanded break. Wichita was 0 for 3 on the powerplay in the first, while Bossier-Shreveport was 0 for 2.
The game stayed 1-0 for the majority of the second period before the âBugs suddenly scored two goals just 42 seconds apart to take the lead. Dave Pszenyczny got it started on the powerplay with his second goal in as many games. The play started when Tyrel Lucas fired a long shot that bounced off the tip of Jon Horrell's glove and was trickling toward the goal line when Pszenyczny jammed it home to tie the game at one at 16:54. Only 42 seconds later, Joe Ori fed a nice pass into the right circle for Mark Johnson, who ripped a shot into the top corner to give the Mudbugs a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Wichita battled back to tie the game in the third period when Glenn Detulleo beat Ken Carroll from the right wing side, making it 2-2 at 6:09 of the third. Bossier-Shreveport then went on top to stay when Joe Blaznek skated the puck deep into Thunder territory before dishing to Ori, who beat Horrell stick side for the winner.
The teams combined for a season-low 38 shots with Bossier-Shreveport outshooting Wichita 23-15. Ken Carroll stopped 13 shots in his sixth victory of the year, while Jon Horrell made 20 saves in defeat. The Mudbugs converted 1 of 6 powerplays on the night and held the Thunder scoreless on five powerplays.
The Mudbugs will now head home to close out a three-game weekend tomorrow afternoon against the Tulsa Oilers. Opening puck-drop is set for 4:05 pm as the âBugs play their final game before the Christmas break. Group ticket packages and mini-plans are available through the Mudbugs office at 752-BUGS, while individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 741-9700.
