Kansas City Mavericks News Release
LOVELAND, Colorado - The Missouri Mavericks lost their third straight game Saturday night to the Colorado Eagles, 6-2. Eagles' forward Steve Haddon had three assists and Ed McGrane had a pair of goals and an assist in Colorado's seventh straight win. Nick Sirota scored his third goal in the past two games for Missouri and Jeff Christian had the other marker as the Mavericks fell to 10-14-1 on the season. The Mavericks will head back to Independence for a game Tuesday, December 22 against the Laredo Bucks at Independence Events Center.
For the second straight night Missouri took the lead by scoring the opening goal, but couldn't hold on before the end of the first peirod. The Mavericks were on the penalty kill when Brett Hammond picked up a turnover on the left wing boards and fired a center pass to Sirota who tipped it past Eagles' goaltender Mike Mole. The goal marked Sirota's third in the past two games and it was also the Mavericks' third shorthanded goal of the season.
The Eagles bounced back and Riley Nelson scored his 16th goal of the season when a puck came out of the left corner, and buried a backhand past Mavericks' goaltender Alexandre Vincent. Aaron Schneekloth scored just over one minute after the Nelson goal to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Schneekloth made a nice move at the right hash marks, skated to the slot and snapped a shot that was initially blocked by Vincent, but he picked up his own rebound and buried it.
The home team extended their lead in the second period. Fraser Filipic scored his first goal of the season on a rebound at the 4:10 mark, and then McGrane scored at the 11:49 mark on a shorthanded goal when he wristed a shot through traffic and past Vincent. The Eagles held on to the 4-1 lead after two periods and had a 19-16 edge in shots.
After no scoring through the first 14 minutes of the third period, McGrane notched his second of the night on a power play goal at 14:37. Ryan McLeod got in on the action when he scored on a slapshot at 17:09 to make the score 6-1 in favor of Colorado.
The Mavericks continued to play hard, and Jeff Christian scored his 10th goal of the season with just 1:01 remaining in the game on a breakaway. Christian's goal finalized the scoring at 6-2.
Missouri finished 0-5 on the power play in the game and 1-15 on the power play in two games against Colorado over the weekend. Colorado was 2-7 on the power play and for the third straight game against Missouri, the Eagles tallied six goals.
Missouri's next home game is Tuesday, December 22 against the Laredo Bucks at 7:05 p.m. at Independence Events Center. It is a Price Chopper "Two-for-Tuesday" game in which fans can purchase one terrace or club level ticket and get one free. The tickets must be purchased at the Box Office on the day of the game, and fans must show their Chopper Shopper card. For more information, visit www.MissouriMavericks.com.
