Falcons Edged by Steelheads
April 3, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â Brian Passmore's third period power play goal drew the Fresno Falcons close down the stretch but wasn't enough to overcome the Idaho Steelheads as the Falcons lost on Friday at Save Mart Center, 2-1, in front of 5,828 fans.
The teams skated to a scoreless tie through the opening 20 minutes before Idaho's Dan Vandermeer ripped a shot top shelf past Fresno goaltender Terry Denike at 12:18 of the second. Late in the period the Falcons were assessed two minor penalties, and on the ensuing five-on-three, Jan Kopecky one-timed a blast past Denike to give the Steelheads a 2-0 lead with under six seconds remaining in the second.
The Falcons finally solved Idaho netminder Blair Allison at 13:57 of the third with a power play goal of their own. Daniel Bohac corralled the rebound from a Scott Borders one-timer and fed Passmore for the rookie's 17th of the year to draw Fresno within a single goal. Despite pulling Denike in the closing moments in favor of an extra attacker, the Falcons would only beat Allison once on the evening on their way to losing, 2-1.
Fresno missed an opportunity to pass the Long Beach Ice Dogs in the Pacific Division standings, who lost earlier in the evening to the Texas Wildcatters. The Falcons remain one point behind Long Beach in the division's cellar with a record of 22-43-6 and 50 points.
The Falcons finish the 2003-04 campaign tomorrow with a re-match against Idaho at 7 p.m. at Save Mart Center. The team will hold a jersey raffle immediately following the game, where fans will have an opportunity to win the Falcons' game-worn jerseys right off the players' backs.
Tickets to the game can be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets, which include select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo Latino locations, charged by phone at 485-TIXS or bought online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon throughout www.fresnofalcons.com.
