Bakersfield, Calif. â Brian Gornick scored twice and added an assist as the San Diego Gulls defeated the Bakersfield Condors 5-2 in front of 5,191 fans at Centennial Garden on Friday night.
San Diego took the early lead with Gornick's first of the night just 1:38 into the game. They added another tally late in the period on a miscue behind the Condors net by G Shane Bendera. Darren Partch tallied the goal to make it 2-0 after one period. The Gulls added two more in the middle frame to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Gornick and rookie Paul Caponigri scored just 27 seconds apart to chase Bendera from the game just 4:55 into the second period. Joe Watkins replaced Bendera in net for the remainder of the night.
Partch's second of the game early in the third period finally beat Watkins, who finished the night stopping nine of ten shots and played strong in relief. He has allowed just three goals in his last 155 minutes (1.16 GAA). Bakersfield bounced back with a pair of tallies to cut the deficit. Jimmy Drolet scored his seventh of the season at 5:35 of the third period to put Bakersfield on the board. Todd Alexander's 12th of the season at 9:16 gave him a goal in three straight games and made the final score 5-2. On a side note, Jon Mirasty earned 27 minutes in penalties with his altercation with Partch early in the third frame, giving him 358 PIM on the season to establish a new single-season Condors record.
The Condors finish against Las Vegas on Saturday night at 7:00pm at Centennial Garden. The first 2,000 fans 12 and under will receive a Condors youth replica jersey, sponsored by KGET-TV 17, K-Lite 105.3 and McDonald's. Saturday's game also features a retirement ceremony for a pair of longtime Condors that are calling it a career after the season. Paul Willett and Glen Mears, who have played a combined 12 years in Bakersfield. All games, home and away, can be heard on KGEO AM 1230 and online at www.bakersfieldcondors.com, with "Condors Countdown" starting 15 prior to face off. The "Voice of the Condors" Kevin Bartl handles the play-by-play.
