The ECHL announced today that Gladiators rookie forward Kevin Doell has been named the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Year. Doell becomes the second skater in a row to win the John A. Daley Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the ECHL.
Named to the All ECHL Rookie Team on Wednesday, Doell is tied for first on the team with two shorthand goals and two shorthand assists while ranking second in assists with 41, plus-minus rating with +28, power-play assists with 14, and power-play points with 24 (10g-14a).
The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan native leads all ECHL rookies in goals scored with 33 in 62 games with Gwinnett. Doell has twice tied a team record for goals in a game with four and his 7 game winning goals is the most this season for the Gladiators and leads all ECHL rookies.
Named the CCM ECHL Rookie of the Month for February as well as the InGlasCo ECHL player of the week for February 2nd through 8th, Doell has been twice recalled to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League where he has recorded a game winning goal and an assist in 8 games. While recalled to the AHL this season, Gwinnett has gone 1-8-0 without Doell in the line up.
Under contract to Chicago of the AHL, Doell is 15th overall in scoring in the ECHL and has 72 points (32g, 40a) in 60 games with the Gladiators while his +26, plus-minus rating is good for fourth among rookies this season.
