Division Champion IceGators Drop Final Game 4-3
April 3, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Louisiana IceGators News Release
Biloxi, MS - The Louisiana IceGators dropped the final game of the regular season to the Mississippi Sea Wolves tonight in a 4-3 loss in Biloxi. The IceGators clinched the Central Division crown last night and will face the Pensacola Ice Pilots in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
The Sea Wolves shot out of the gate and into the net in the opening minute of the game and would go on to take a 4-0 lead before the IceGators could register a goal. Three IceGators lit the lamp, but the late rally was to no avail as the Wolves' Sean Matile stopped 46 of 49 IceGators shots.
Anthony Battaglia opened the scoring against IceGator Derek Gustafson at the 56 second mark of the first period. Travis Lisabeth, Andrew Proskurnicki and Kerry Ellis-Toddington each added power play goals in the second period.
Dennis Shiryaev scored his first goal since coming off the injured reserve when he bounced the puck off Matile just past the midway point of the second period. Jamie Johnson and Maxime Fortunus assisted.
Semir Ben-Amor helped to close the gap again with his 16th goal. Ben-Amor was assisted by Bruce Richardson and Kenny Corupe.
Paul Ballantyne scored his first goal as an IceGator when he crashed the net and beat Matile with less than three minutes to go in the third period. Kenny Corupe picked up his second helper of the evening and Rod Sarich collected his 25th assist.
The first two games of the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs will be Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8 at 7:05 p.m. at the Cajundome. The third game will be played in Pensacola on Saturday, April 10 at 7:05 p.m. If a game four is needed, it will also be in Pensacola, on Tuesday, April 13 at 7:05 p.m. Game five, if needed to decide the first round series, will be Wednesday, April 14 at 7:05 p.m. at the Cajundome.
