Chiefs Defeat Titans 4-2
April 3, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (April 3, 2004) â On the final day of the regular season, the Titans found themselves still in a struggle for the fifth and last playoff spot in the Northern Division. The Titans put up a good fight tonight but ultimately ended up on the wrong side of the scoresheet with a 4-2 loss to the Johnstown Chiefs in front of 7,832 at Sovereign Bank Arena. This marks the first time in the team's five-year history that the team has fallen short of a post-season berth.
Johnstown got on the board early, as forward Dominic Forget stuffed the puck under the left leg of Titans goaltender Chris Houle 55 seconds into the opening period. Forget would follow-up with another goal at the 18:26 mark of the period, this one on the power play, making it a 2-0 Chiefs advantage.
Four minutes into the second period, as the Titans were short-handed, rookie forward Bryce Cockburn went coast-to-coast on a breakaway and beat Chiefs netminder Dmitri Patzold through the five-hole to cut the Chiefs' lead to one goal. Johnstown would answer back and reclaim the two-goal advantage 3:44 into the second period with a power play goal by defenseman Chris Leinweber.
Scott Bertoli would put the Titans back within reach as he tallied his 19th goal of the season tonight. Zultek took a rink-wide feed fired the puck from the face-off circle on the far side to make it a 3-2 game. However, Johnstown would shut the door on the Titans post-season hopes with a Brent Bilodeau empty-netter with 6.1 seconds remaining, making it a 4-2 final. Chris Houle, making his 19th appearance as a Titan, stopped 19 of 22 shots en route to his eighth loss of the season.
