Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons (45-21-1-5) defeated the Portland Pirates by the final score of 5-2 Friday night at the MassMutual Center, matching a franchise record for most wins in a season with 45. The 1997-98 and 2012-13 teams also won 45 games.
The Falcons scored four unanswered goals to dissolve a 2-1 deficit at the end of 20 minutes. Cody Goloubef, who scored on a shot from the point just 0:11 into the game, notched the only Springfield tally in the opening frame. Goloubef also added an assist and finished the contest with a +3 rating.
Patrick McNeill netted the game-winning goal at 18:39 of the second period, as he ripped a one-timer from the right-wing circle on a 4-on-3 power play to give Springfield a 3-2 lead. McNeill's goal was his 11th of the season, leading all Falcons defensemen.
Rookie Marko Dano registered a goal and an assist, notching his second pro goal in North America at the 6:15 mark of the second period. Dano has totaled five points (two goals, three assists) in six games since joining Springfield from Bratislava Slovan of the Kontinental Hockey League.
Carter Camper found the back of the net at 16:37 of the third period, his 11th of the season. Also adding an assist in the game, Camper has amassed 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) in 16 games with the Falcons.
The Falcons made it 5-2 with 2:23 remaining in regulation, as Dana Tyrell scored an empty-net goal, sixth score in 15 games with Springfield.
Ethan Werek and Tim Kennedy scored first-period tallies for Portland.
With the win, the Falcons matched a franchise record with 45 wins in a single season, and the team still has four games remaining on its regular-season schedule. Springfield, with the division and a top-three seed already clinched, is now four points behind the Manchester Monarchs for the top seed in the Eastern Conference with one game in hand.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday, April 12 to host the Hershey Bears at 7:00 p.m. for the team's last regular-season home game.
Fans are invited to the MassMutual Center in 2013-14 to watch the reigning Northeast Division-champion Falcons compete in their 20th anniversary season.
