Falcons Drop Pirates 5-2

April 11, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Springfield, MA - The Portland Pirates led after one period of play, but couldn't hold on as they were defeated by the Springfield Falcons 5-2 on Friday night. Louis Domingue became the first AHL goaltender to stop two penalty shots in a game since Wade Dubielewicz did so for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on December 10, 2005 in the defeat.

Springfield struck quickly in the first. Cody Goloubef scored just 11 seconds into the game to give Springfield a 1-0 lead, the fasted goal allowed in Pirates history. The previous record was 15 seconds on October 8th, 2000 against the Syracuse Crunch. However, Ethan Werek struck back for Portland, scoring an unassisted goal at 6:25 to tie the game. After a penalty on Ryan Craig, Tim Kennedy tipped a Werek shot past Anton Forsberg on the power play at 14:11 of the first. Ethan Werek and Joel Hanley picked up assists on Kennedy's 4th goal of the year. The Pirates outshot the Falcons 9-7 in the first period.

The Falcons stormed back in the second. Marko Dano tied the game on the power play with 13:45 left in the period with his 6th goal of the year for the Falcons. Springfield was then awarded 2 penalty shot attempts on two different infractions, but Louis Domingue stopped them both, becoming the first goaltender in the AHL to do so since Wade Dubielewicz on December 10, 2005. The 2 penalty shots in the period were the most the Pirates have had to face in a single game in franchise history, and the 5 penalty shots against this season are the most in team history. However, Domingue was peppered with shots towards the end of the frame, as Patrick McNeill gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead with just over a minute left in the second period on the power play.

Springfield pulled away in the final frame. Paul Thompson added to the Springfield lead at 17:37 of the third to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead. Just as Louis Domingue headed off for the extra attacker for Portland, the Falcons sealed the game as Dana Tyrell scored the empty netter exactly one minute after Thompson's insurance goal. Domingue finished the night with 23 saves for the Pirates. The loss ties the Pirates' longest winless streak of the season at 6 games

The Pirates finish their 2013-14 road schedule tomorrow as they head to Manchester to face the Monarchs in the final game of the VIP Cup Series, presented by VIP Tires & Service. Game time is set for 7:00 pm and can be heard on WLOB 1310 AM as well as WEZR FM 105.5/AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
