Bridgeport Islanders News Release
LOWELL, MA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, ended a six-game winless streak at 0-5-1 with a 4-0 road win over the Lowell Lock Monsters Friday. Chris Madden and Wade Dubielewicz combined for the shutout in goal for the Sound Tigers, and all four netminders who dressed for the game ended up playing.
Each team had a several opportunities to opening the scoring in a wild first period. First, Lowell's Chad Larose had the puck skip off his stick just to the right of an open Sound Tigers net with the Lock Monsters on the power play then Jeff Hamilton and Steve Regier had near misses just outside the Lowell crease. The Lock Monsters thought they had scored with 2:53 left in the opening frame, but referee Francois St. Laurent ruled that Gordie Dwyer interfered with Madden, so the goal was disallowed, and the Sound Tigers went on the power play.
On the ensuing advantage, left-handed David Masse chipped home the rebound of a Regier shot with 1:15 left in the first period for his third goal of the season and second in as many games. Jeremy Colliton had other assist on the play. Both Regier and Colliton extended scoring streaks to three games on the play. The Sound Tigers also went right back on the power play at that point because Lowell's Danny Richmond threw Regier down to the ice.
The 1-0 lead came at a price for the Sound Tigers who started the middle frame without defenseman Allan Rourke, a former Lock Monster, and Madden, who was replaced by Dubielewicz after the first intermission.
Bruno Gervais extended his scoring streak to three games and doubled the lead to 2-0 with his eighth marker of the year 2:11 into the middle frame off an assist from Sean Bergenheim. Gervais actually banked the puck off Lowell netminder Kevin Nastiuk from below the line to move into the goal-scoring lead among all AHL defenseman on the play.
The Sound Tigers made it 3-0 when Matt Koalska redirected a Kevin Colley shot while driving through the slot for his eighth tally at 8:34 of the second period with Regier also assisting on the play after which the Lock Monsters pulled Nastiuk in favor of Vitaly Kolesnik.
Wyatt Smith redirected a Jeff Hamilton shot for his eighth goal of the season to make it 4-0 Sound Tigers with 6:03 left in the game. Bergenheim also collected his second helper of the evening on the play, which moved Smith back into a tie with Koalska and Gervais for the team's goal-scoring lead.
With the Sound Tigers shorthanded and 1:54 left to play, Bergenheim was awarded a penalty shot when Kolesnik darted out of his crease for a loose puck and lost control of his stick. However, Kolesnik forced Bergenheim to miss wide left on the Sound Tigers' second penalty shot in as many Fridays on the road; Masi Marjamaki was forced wide right last week in Syracuse by Crunch goaltender Andrew Penner.
Regier was the first star of the game, Gervais the second and Bergenheim the third. Madden made 15 saves in 20 minutes of play while Dubielewicz stopped 15 shots over two periods for the Sound Tigers. Nastiuk stopped 11 of 14 shots while Kolesnik denied nine of ten for Lowell.
The Sound Tigers were 1 for 7 on the power play, 10 for 10 on the penalty and won despite being outshot 30-24.
The Sound Tigers will begin a three-game homestand this weekend. They will host the Philadelphia Phantoms this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. on "Heroes Night" and "Westport Town Night", the Hartford Wolf Pack this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. on "Trivia Night" and "Stratford Town Night" and the Hershey Bears this coming Wednesday, December 7th at 11 a.m. in the third-annual, educationally-themed "Cool Fun 101" morning game.
