Hamilton, ON - Toronto centre John Pohl scored twice on the power play, including the game winner early in the second period, leading the Marlies to a 3-1 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night at Copps Coliseum.
The Marlies opened the scoring 8:20 into the first period while on the power play. Defenceman Brendan Bell's shot from the point was stopped by Bulldogs goaltender Yann Danis, but Pohl was left alone at the side of the net and buried the rebound for his 11th goal of the season.
J-F Racine replaced J-S Aubin in the Toronto net to start the second period.
Pohl scored his second goal of the game, also on the power play, at the 4:04 mark of the second period to give the Marlies a 2-0 lead. Pohl was stationed to the side of Danis, and after a scramble in the crease area, the puck bounced to Pohl, who shot it over Danis.
Bulldogs forward Marc-Antoine Pouliot cut the Marlies' lead to one goal at the 15:11 mark of the second period with a power-play goal of his own. Playing four-on-three, Pouliot took a give-and-go pass from Jean-Francois Jacques and roofed the shot over Racine's glove.
Toronto took a 3-1 lead with 9:48 left in the third period when John Mitchell scored his first professional goal. The Marlies broke out on a two-on-one rush off a Bulldogs turnover and Mitchell buried a shot from the right face-off circle past Danis.
Bulldogs goaltender Danis stopped 13 shots in a losing cause. Aubin made 11 saves for the Marlies before leaving the game after the first period and Racine stopped 17 of the 18 shots that he faced to earn the victory.
Hamilton was 1 for 7 with the man advantage while Toronto was 2 for 3.
The Bulldogs next action will take place on Saturday, December 3 when they travel up the QEW to face the Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum in the second half of a home-and-home series. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs next home game will take place on Friday, December 9, when they host the Syracuse Crunch. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Copps Coliseum Box Office (in-person sales only), any Ticketmaster outlet, or online at ticketmaster.ca.
