Dragons Blast 4 Home Runs, Win 8-1

Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons blasted four home runs including three in the fifth inning, and three Dayton pitchers combined to allow just five hits as the Dragons routed the Lansing Lugnuts 8-1. The game was the start of a three-game series at Fifth Third Field.

The Dragons matched their season highs for largest victory margin, most hits in a game (13), and most home runs in a game, while establishing a season high for most home runs in an inning. They also produced back-to-back home runs for the second time in 2019.

The Dragons got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning when Brian Rey lined a single to left field and Pabel Manzanero followed with a home run off the front of the concessions building beyond the left field fence to make it 2-0. It was Manzanero's team-leading sixth homer of the year.

Lansing's Gabriel Moreno belted a solo home run in the top of the second to pull the Lugnuts to within a run at 2-1.

It was still 2-1 when the Dragons game to bat in the fifth. Randy Ventura opened the inning with an infield single before Reniel Ozuna belted a home run to left field, his second of the year, to make it 4-1. Rey then lined a homer to left, his fourth of the season, and third in the last five games. Ozuna and Rey joined Morgan Lofstrom and Carlos Rivero from May 6 as Dragons with back-to-back home runs. Two batters later, Juan Martinez came to the plate with a man on base and launched the longest home run of the night, a two-run shot to make it 7-1. It was Martinez's third homer of the season.

The Dragons closed out the scoring in the seventh inning on consecutive doubles by Martinez and Lofstrom to make it 8-1.

Dragons starting pitcher Connor Curlis (1-1) worked five strong innings to earn the victory. He allowed one run on a solo home run. He gave up five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Alexis Diaz replaced Curlis and retired all nine batters he faced, striking out two. Jerry D'Andrea pitched a perfect ninth inning, also striking out two. Lansing did not have a base runner after the fourth inning as the last 16 Lugnuts batters were retired. Dragons pitchers did not allow a walk in the game.

Six Dragons hitters each had two hits including Ventura, Ozuna, Rey, Martinez, Lofstrom, and Rivero. Rey and Manzanero both extended personal hitting streaks to five straight games.

Notes: Prior to the game, the Dragons activated Diaz and outfielder Shard Munroe from the injured list. Relief pitcher Andrew McDonald was sent back to extended spring training and outfielder Zeek White was released.

Up Next: The Dragons (16-36) host Lansing (21-29) at Fifth Third Field in the second game of the series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Ricky Salinas (1-2, 6.20) will start for the Dragons against Josh Winckowski (4-2, 2.40).

Special announcement: In response to the widespread damage caused by the weather emergency on the night of May 27th, the Dragons will be accepting non-perishable food items at Fifth Third Field for all six games on the current home stand, beginning with tonight's game. Cash donations will also be accepted.

All non-perishable food items collected at Fifth Third Field through June 2 will be donated to the Foodbank, Inc. Additionally, the Dragons will conduct a "pass the bucket" at each game during this home stand for fans wishing to donate money. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross, Dayton Chapter.

All fans with tickets to any of the six games on the current home stand (May 28-June 2) who are unable to attend the game due to issues related to the weather damage may exchange their ticket to any future Dragons game in 2019 (based on availability).
