Worcester Red Sox News Release

BUFFALO, N.Y. - A pair of eighth-inning swings led the Worcester Red Sox (30-30) to a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Bisons (33-26) on Sunday afternoon, clinching a series victory at Sahlen Field.

The WooSox trailed 2-1 entering the top of the eighth inning, a frame that began with a double by Jaylin Davis. That brought Jeter Downs to the plate against Buffalo reliever Bowden Francis-Downs worked a 3-1 count, then crushed the fifth pitch he saw deep to left for a go-ahead, two-run home run.

The long ball, which made it a 3-2 ballgame, gave Downs his first hit of the series and his 10th home run of the year.

Three batters later, Jarren Duran launched a solo shot of his own to right, his fifth of the season to extend the lead to 4-2. Duran's shot marked his first homer since May 23, coming at Sahlen Field, the site of his first Major League homer.

After a runless bottom of the eighth for Kaleb Ort, Buffalo cut the deficit to 4-3 in the ninth on a Zack Collins RBI double and put the game-tying run on third. But Ort got a groundout to close the ballgame, sealing a series-clinching win for the road team.

In a scheduled bullpen day, the WooSox used six different pitchers, holding Buffalo's offense to two total runs. The first run came in the second against Worcester starter Thomas Pannone, and it scored on total of zero hits. Pannone walked Chavez Young, who got to second on a third disengagement from the rubber, stole third, then got home on a wild pitch.

Half an inning later, Duran came to the plate for the WooSox and tied the game up with an RBI single, a ball that just stayed fair down the left field line.

Scoreless outings from Eduard Bazardo, Brian Keller and Geoff Hartlieb kept the 1-1 scoreline intact until the seventh inning. With Frank German on the mound, a misplayed ball in left-ultimately scored a double on a difficult jumping play for Christin Stewart-put Samad Taylor in scoring position. A fly ball moved Taylor deeper in to scoring position, and he would score the go-ahead run on another wild pitch.

Worcester rallied for three thanks to Downs and Duran in the eighth, the two biggest swings in the victory. Buffalo got one back in the ninth, but Ort locked down his eighth save of the season, a total that moves him in to sole possession of second place in the International League.

The WooSox are off Monday and return home on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. against the Toledo Mud Hens, affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. On the mound, Brandon Walter gets the start for Worcester after recording his first Triple-A win in Buffalo. Radio coverage is live at 6:25 p.m. on 100.1 FM The Pike 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network, while television coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. on NESN+.
