Syracuse Wraps up Homestand with 10-1 Win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Mets ended their seven-game series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on a high note, grabbing a 10-1 win on a sunny Sunday at NBT Bank Stadium. The Mets snapped a four-game losing streak in the process while hitting three home runs in the game.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (23-37) struck first in the top of the second inning. Ender Inciarte hit a solo home run over the right-field wall for a 1-0 RailRiders lead.

Syracuse (21-38) got to work in the bottom of the third. The Mets plated four runs and took a 4-1 lead in slightly unconventional fashion. Daniel Johnson reached leading off the inning after he was plunked by a pitch, bringing Johneshwy Fargas to the plate. Fargas tried to drop down a sacrifice bunt, but he sent it right back to the RailRiders starting pitcher Matt Krook. This actually turned out to be the best-case scenario for the Mets, as Krook threw poorly to first and sent the ball rolling up the right-field line. As the right-fielder Ryan LaMarre fielded the ball in right, Johnson dashed for home, forcing another poor throw, this time from LaMarre, as Johnson scroed to tie the game, 1-1, and Fargas sprinted all the way to third base amidst the madness.

Then, Fargas made the inning even crazier. Before an offering to Dominic Smith, Fargas sprinted home and scored before the throw from Krook, giving Syracuse a 2-1 lead on its first steal of home this season. Fargas has been a master thief on the base paths this season, swiping 20 bags on the campaign between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse.

From there, the third inning settled into a more familiar pattern. Smith singled to put a runner back on base with nobody out, and Mark Vientos brought him home with a two-run home run that sailed over the wall in right-center field. Vientos was making his return to the lineup after being placed on the Injured List last week. The 22-year-old now has eight home runs this season, three of which have come against Krook.

The Mets retained the 4-1 lead until the bottom of the eighth inning when they blew the game open with six runs on six hits and sent all nine batters to the plate. Luke Ritter and Fargas provided RBI doubles in the inning, followed by home runs from Daniel Palka and Smith to cap off the dominant inning. Palka has reached base in 14 straight games, batting .333 (18-for-54) with three home runs and 15 RBIs. Smith went 3-for-4 on Sunday with two RBIs and three runs scored. Smith has reached in eight of the nine games he has played in since joining Syracuse in Triple-A last month.

Not to be lost among all the offense was the excellent pitching for the Mets throughout the game. Six pitchers combined to hold the RailRiders to six hits and one run for the game with seven strikeouts in the process. Trevor Cahill started for the first time this season for Syracuse, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts. The former MLB All-Star has now pitched in ten different organizations in his career.

From there, the bullpen did the job. Michel Otanez, Eric Orze, Yoan López, Bryce Montes de Oca, and R.J. Alvarez pitched the final seven innings in scoreless fashion, allowing just four hits while striking out five batters. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was haunted by missed opportunities all afternoon long, stranding 13 runners on base.

Syracuse now hits the road for two weeks, beginning its 12-game stretch away from NBT Bank Stadium with six games at the Norfolk Tides (the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) next week. First pitch of the series opener is set for 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday night.
