Dodgers Dusted by Missions in Doubleheader

San Antonio, Texas - The San Antonio Missions swept a doubleheader against the Oklahoma City Dodgers Thursday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium, staging a late comeback in the first game and tossing a three-hit shutout to take the second game.

The Dodgers took an early 3-0 lead in Game 1, but the Missions scored eight runs between the sixth and seventh innings to come back and win, 8-3.

Trailing by two runs heading to bottom of the sixth in a seven-inning game, San Antonio (12-8) rallied for seven runs. It was the highest-scoring inning by a Dodgers opponent this season and marked the fifth straight game a Dodgers opponent tallied an inning with four or more runs.

After the first batter of the inning was retired, Cory Spangenberg homered to cut the Dodgers' lead to one. Keston Hiura doubled, and following a wild pitch, Tyrone Taylor knocked a game-tying RBI single.

Two batters later, Troy Stokes Jr. gave the Missions the lead with a two-run double to deep left field. After the second out was recorded, Jacob Nottingham sent a fly ball to right-center field. Drew Jackson and Kyle Garlick collided as the ball fell to the ground, allowing Stokes to score. Jake Hager capped the big inning with a pinch-hit, two-run homer.

The Dodgers (7-13) seemed to be in control for the majority of the game. Jackson gave the Dodgers their first hit and runs of the day with a three-run homer in the top of the second inning. Edwin RÃ-os led off the inning with a walk before Garlick was hit by a pitch. Facing a full count, Jackson sent a deep drive to the left field grass berm for his first home run with OKC.

Through the first four innings, the Missions collected three singles and did not have a runner advance into scoring position. Nate Orf put San Antonio on the board in the fifth inning when he stroked a solo home run off the batter's eye to cut OKC's lead to 3-1.

Dodgers starting pitcher Dennis Santana cruised until giving up the home run to Orf, and he left the game after Spangenberg's homer. Santana allowed two runs and five hits over 5.1 innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

Josh Fields (1-0) worked around a leadoff double in the sixth inning and ended up with the win for San Antonio. Dodgers reliever Josh Sborz (0-1) was charged with six of the seven runs San Antonio scored in the sixth inning and took the loss.

In the nightcap, three Missions pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout and capture a 3-0 win.

The Missions struck first in Game 2. Hager connected on his second home run in as many at-bats with a line drive solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to open the scoring.

San Antonio added two runs in the fourth innings as a result of two errors by the Dodgers. A walk and a pair of fielding miscues loaded the bases with one out, and David Freitas took advantage of the situation with a two-run single.

Missions starting pitcher Burch Smith kept the Dodgers scoreless over 5.1 innings and pooled with two relievers on San Antonio's third shutout in the last four games. Smith (3-0) held the Dodgers 0-for-8 with runners on base and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position, sending the Dodgers to their second shutout loss of the season. He notched five strikeouts and issued one walk.

Donnie Hart and Taylor Williams recorded the final five outs, as the trio of pitchers combined to retire 12 of the final 13 OKC batters. Williams recorded two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh inning, earning his first save.

Dodgers starting pitcher Ben Holmes set a new career high with 10 strikeouts in just four innings of work, but took the loss for OKC. Holmes (0-2) was charged with three runs overall, but only one earned run. He surrendered three hits and two walks.

The Dodgers were held to a total of six hits across the doubleheader, going 6-for-47 collectively over the two games and 1-for-15 with runners on base. The Missions did not allow a run over the last 12 innings of the doubleheader and kept the Dodgers scoreless in 13 of their 14 trips to the plate.
