Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones tied an ECHL record with their 14th consecutive win Friday night against Johnstown, in a 5-2 win. The triumph comes on the 28th anniversary of the United States Olympic hockey team defeating the Russians, 4-3, at Lake Placid, New York. The club also clinched a playoff berth with the triumph. The first team in the North Division of the ECHL to accomplish the feat.

David Desharnais also tied an ECHL record with an assist for the 17th straight game with a pair of helpers in the victory.

Johnstown opened the scoring 6:18 into the first period when Vincent Zaore skated out of the penalty box and had a breakaway shot behind the Cincinnati defenders, as Ryan Garlock rifled a pass past the Cyclones defense. Zaore netted his fourth score of the season and the Chiefs led, 1-0.

Cincinnati tied the game at 1-1, when Mathieu Aubin took a feed in the goal crease from Jason Deitsch, to collect his 14th goal of the season and third in two nights. Deitsch intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and worked a two-on-two with Aubin up the right wing and then threw the pass on the backdoor step for Aubin. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 15-3, in the opening period.

The Cyclones erupted for three second period goals to blow the game open. Thomas Beauregard netted his 22nd goal at 11:39 from David Desharnais and Jason Deitsch on a five-on-three power play. Ryan Maki collected his first ECHL goal at 16:40 to extend the lead to 3-1, with Desharnais and Scott Reynolds adding the helpers. T.J. McElroy fired home his fifth of the season from the left point with assists from Aubin and Olivier Latendresse to bump the lead to 4-1.

With 7.1 seconds remaining in the middle frame, Johnstown narrowed the gap to 4-2, with Alexandre Imbeault netting his 13th goal on a five-on-three power play. The Cyclones won the shots on goal battle in the second period, 15-11.

In the third period, Latendresse collected his first goal as a Cyclone at 12:36, as Aubin added an assist and Wolfe collected his second of the night.

Cedrick Desjardins stopped 23 shots in taking the victory for Cincinnati.

The Cyclones began their 14-game winning streak against Dayton on Jan. 16 in a 3-2 win. The club has outscored the opposition, 56-22, during the run. It is the third-longest winning streak in ECHL history.

The ECHL record for consecutive wins in a season is 14 set by Knoxville (1992-93) and Louisiana (2001-02).

For the first time in team history, the Cincinnati Cyclones are 30 games above .500, with a 38-8-3 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-twelve points ahead of second place Elmira. The triumph gives Cincinnati a 22-2-1 record since December 15. Johnstown is xx-xx-x. The magic number for clinching a playoff berth is three and the Cyclones could clinch a playoff spot Friday night.

Cincinnati is next in action on Saturday, when Elmira visits U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm.
