Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (30-17-4=64, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL notched the team's thirtieth win of the year with a 7-2 victory over the Trenton Devils at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. Although the Devils scored first, Reading bounced back to take a three goal lead mid-way into the second period and then pulled away with a three goal third. The Royals power play struck for three (in ten chances) while the penalty kill blanked the Devils in nine opportunities with the man advantage. Jon Quick (22-11-3; 24/26) won his twenty-second game of the year, while Maxime Ouellet (0-1-0; 21/28) took the loss in his debut with the Devils.

Trenton struck first 4:05 into the game when Trevor Kell ripped one from deep and wide on the right side that beat Quick to the far side for his eleventh goal of the year. Reading bounced back to tie at the 6:48 mark of the first on a power play goal by Joe Zappala, who worked a give-and-go with Patrick Jarrett to gain some ice in the right circle. Zappala ripped a snap shot home for his eighth of the year. The Royals began to pull away early in the second. Brock Hooton and Dany Roussin worked a textbook two on one 2:25 into the period for Roussin's 16th of the season. Patrick Jarrett struck for a short-handed goal at the 8:44 mark of the second, when he stole and broke with speed through the neutral zone. Jarrett carried deep into the offensive end and ripped a low, hard rocket behind Ouellet for his sixth goal of the year and what proved to be his second game winner in the last four games (as well as his first short-handed goal with the Royals). Reading stretched the lead to three with a five-on-three power play at the 11:08 mark of the second. Defenseman Steven Later threw a wrister from the right point that Zappala deflected by Ouellett for his second of the night and ninth of the year.

Trenton cut the Royals' lead to 4-2 when Tony Zancanaro jammed one in from the in tight with just 1:51 remaining in the second. In the third, the Royals refused to let Trenton back into the game, scoring three more, which included the first goal of the season for Shawn Collymore (playing in his first game in Reading this year) 6:29 into the third; the ninth of the season for Kevin Saurette 59 seconds later; and a power play goal by Shawn Germain (his second of the season) at the 12:17 mark of the third. The Royals played sound defense and got a couple of stops from Quick down the stretch to protect the five goal lead and extend the team's home unbeaten streak to seven (6-0-1).

The Royals are on the road on Saturday night (7:35 pm) against the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia. The game night broadcast that night will begin at 7:05 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
