Trenton Devils News Release
READING, PA (February 22, 2008) - The Trenton Devils' fell victim to strong goaltending and breakneck transition play en route to a 7-2 loss to the Reading Royals. The Devils skated level with the Royals for the first half of the game, but a flurry of goals from the Pennsylvania squad put the contest away.
Trevor Kell landed on the score sheet first in the opening frame, firing a burning wrister into the top left corner of the net. Kell's tally gave him his eleventh goal of the season, and was set up by the red-hot Matt Radoslovich, who extended his point streak to four games. The New Jersey native now has five points (3g, 2a) in his past four contests.
Reading responded less than a minute and a half later, however, when Joe Zappala snapped a rising shot to the top right corner of the net. The goal came on the first power play of the game for the Royals, and was scored 5:48 in.
The second period featured a test of Trenton's penalty kill squad, as Reading received two five-on-three chances. The Devils killed off the first one, but the second two-man edge generated Zappala's second goal of the night.
Earlier in the period Dany Roussin also netted a short-handed tally, leading an odd-man rush with Brock Hooton. Combined with Dany Roussin's eleventh point against the Devils this season, a goal generated on an odd-man rush, Reading earned a 4-1 lead.
It was a lead the Devils would chip away at. Tony Zancanaro, combined with Jason Paige in front of the net, hammered the rubber past an overmatched Jonathon Quick with less than two minutes to go in the period. Zancanaro's ninth goal of the season was set up by Evan Shaw, who saw the opening from behind the goal.
In the end, however, three more goals for Reading sealed the deal, as Shawn Collymore, Kevin Saurette, and Shawn Germain combined to finish the score at 7-2.
Maxime Ouellet was much stronger than his numbers suggest; all but two of the goals scored against him came on odd man rushes or on the power play. He finished the night with 21 saves on 28 shots in the first ECHL game of his career.
Jonathon Quick made several spectacular stops on 24 saves against 26 shots to earn his 22nd win of the season.
The Trenton Devils continue their road trip with a contest against the Reading Royal this Friday from the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA at 7:05. Tune into WTSR 91.3 or go online to www.trentondevils.com and listen or watch live courtesy of B2 Networks.
