Elmira Jackals News Release

WHEELING, WV - Justin Chwedoruk scored from the right wing corner with fifty-one seconds left in regulation to lift the Wheeling Nailers to a 4-3 win over the Elmira Jackals Friday night in front of 3,115 fans at WesBanco Arena. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak by the Nailers and allowed the Reading Royals to climb to within three points of the second place Jackals.

Down a goal heading into the final period, the Jackals tied the game on a Pierre-Luc Faubert power play goal at 2:15, jamming home a Matt Gens rebound on the door step, for his team-leading 22nd of the year and team-high ninth power play strike.

It looked like that goal would be good enough to get the contest to overtime, but with the Jackals killing a B ruce Watson penalty with just under a minute to go, Wheeling canceled any sudden death plans the Jackals may have had.

Just as Watson left the penalty box, Seamus Young a dump-in to the right wing corner. Chwedoruk sped in and threw the puck from a near impossible angle to the goal mouth. The puck appeared to hit Joel Martin (24 saves), deflect off the crossbar and in for the game-winner at 19:09 .

BenoitDoucet got things started 4:56 into the first period when he whipped home his 18th of the season on feeds from Chaz Johnson and Gens to give the visitors the 1-0 lead shortly after a failed power play attempt.

The Nailers gave the Jackals a second power play chance, but it was Wheeling that capitalized to tie the game when Sean Collins converted on a shorthanded breakaway for his 11th goal of the season at 9:49.

But with time left on the Gino Pisellini tripping call, Doucet scorched his second of the night past David Brown (29 saves) thirty-three seconds later to put Elmira back in front 2-1 at 10:22.

The second period would see the Jackals outshoot the Nailers, but Wheeling potted a pair to take just their second lead of the season series and send Elmira to the dressing room down by a goal after forty minutes.

Former Jackals forward Joe Guenther wired his seventh goal of the year through the pads of Martin off of a face-off win by Collins at 13:01. Just 1:58 later with Seamus Young in the box for tripping, the Nailers grabbed the lead as Vadim Slivchenko capped off a two-on-one shorthanded rush by rifling in his fourth goal this year.

The Jackals wrap up the weekend with a Saturday night contest in Cincinnati against the first place Cylcones at 7:30 p.m. Radio coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. on MAGIC-FM (92.7/97.7) with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-off.
