
Gladiators Fall to Ice Pilots, 3-2

Despite goals from Lou Dickenson and chad Denny, the Gwinnett Gladiators dropped a 3-2 decision to the Pensacola Ice Pilots on Friday night at the Pensacola Civic Center. With the loss, the Gladiators fall to 31-15-5 on the season. Gwinnett battles Mississippi on Saturday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum at 8:05 p.m.
Gwinnett jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Pensacola just 24 seconds into the first period. Lou Dickenson collected his 23rd goal of the season as he ripped a slap shot that deflected high into the air off Pensacola netminder Mike Brodeur and ended up in the back of the Pensacola net. Jeff Campbell collected an assist on the goal for the Gladiators.
Pensacola equalized the contest at one midway through the second period. Adam Berti beat Gladiators netminder Criag Kowalski from the slot for the marker on the power play. Michael Cohen and Bryan Esner collected the assists on the goal at 12:24 of the second period for the Ice Pilots.
Patrick Bordeleau gave the Ice Pilots a 2-1 lead on the Gladiators in the third period. Picking up a rebound in the slot, Bordeleau rolled the puck past Kowalski for the marker at 8:40 of the third period. Dan Sullivan and Bryan MacGregor collected the assists on the goal for Pensacola.
The Ice Pilots extended their lead to 3-1 at 16:55 of the third peirod. Esner worked with Berti on a 2-on-1 break and beat Kowalski for the marker. Esner got credited with the goal as Cohen and Berti collected the assists on the Pensacola marker.
With just one seconds left and Kowalski pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Chad Denny found a loose puck in a scrum in front of the Pensacola net and rolled the puck past Brodeau to cut the Pensacola lead to just one goal. It was too little too late, though, as Gwinnett could get no closer. Gwinnett got assists on the goal from Brad Schell and Dickenson.
Kowalski finished with 23 saves in teh losing effort while the Gladiators went 0-for-2 on the power play in the loss. Pensacola went 1-for-3 on the man advantage in the contest as Pensacola head coach John Marks collected his ECHL record tying 480th career win.
The Gladiators continue their fifth anniversary season on Saturday, February 23rd as they travel to Biloxi to take on the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 8:05 p.m. Catch all the play-by-play action in Saturday's game on WDUN, News Talk 550.
Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
