Albany Devils News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - A three-goal outburst in the second period was the difference as the Lowell Devils were defeated, 3-2, by the Portland Pirates on Friday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

After a scoreless first, Portland took a 1-0 lead 2:04 into the second as Tim Kennedy pulled the puck out of the far corner and cut toward the front of the Devils net. Kennedy got Jeff Frazee to make the first move and go down to the ice before sending the puck over the fallen netminder.

The Pirates extended their edge to two on a power play late in the second period. Stationed at the near circle, Mark Mancari threw a shot toward the far post that Marek Zagrapan tipped around the leg pad of Frazee at 15:15.

Just over two minutes later, Marc-Andre Gragnani led a 2-on-1 into the Lowell zone and ripped shot under the crossbar to make it 3-0 for Portland.

The Devils tried to rally in the final frame and started things up at 6:42 when Stephen Gionta poked home a loose puck for his first goal of the season.

Skating on the man-advantage, Nicklas Bergfors then pulled Lowell within one with 30 seconds left in regulation. The Devils forward notched his 20th of the year as he dug the puck out of a scrum in front and backhanded it past Jhonas Enroth.

Despite firing 41 shots on Enroth in the contest, the Devils could not get the equalizer before time expired. Frazee made 32-of-35 saves for Lowell in the loss.

The Lowell Devils contine their weekend on Saturday, March at 7:05 p.m. against the Worcester Sharks. Listen as Ryan Johnston brings you all of the live action on 980AM-WCAP or at ahllive.com.
