Wolves to Present Martins with Tim Breslin Unsung Hero Award
March 27, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
The Chicago Wolves will present center STEVE MARTINS with the 2009 Tim Breslin Unsung Hero Award before the team battles the Milwaukee Admirals at the Allstate Arena on Sun., March 29, at 3 p.m. The award recognizes the Wolves player who best typifies Breslin's on-ice spirit and team-first attitude.
Breslin, who was one of the first three players signed by the franchise, passed away on Feb. 9, 2005, due to complications from appendiceal cancer, which is a malignancy of the appendix. The Addison native and Driscoll Catholic High School graduate played five seasons with the team and was a member of the 1998 Turner Cup Championship squad. The Breslin family will be on hand to present MARTINS, who was a teammate of Breslin's during the 1997-98 season, with the award.
"Steve has all the qualities that this award stands for," said Wolves Assistant Coach Wendell Young, who was a teammate of Martins and Breslin on the 1998 Turner Cup championship team. "He is always putting others first and is a caring guy on and off the ice. No matter who that person is, whether it's a family member, a teammate or someone he has just met for the first time, he cares about them."
The 36-year-old forward was selected through fan voting on chicagowolves.com from a list of three candidates nominated by the Wolves coaching staff, which also included center Matt Anderson and defenseman Alex Brooks.
MARTINS has helped Chicago capture two championships - its first in 1998 and most recent in 2008 - and has appeared in 254 career regular-season outings with the club, tallying 63 goals,125 assists and 188 points spanning five seasons with the team.
Past winners of the award include current Wolves defenseman Brian Sipotz (2008), and former Wolves players Brian Fahey (2007), Kevin Doell (2006) and Tim Wedderburn (2005).
