Chops blanked by Flames on Friday, 2-0

March 27, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

An opportunity to gain ground in the West Division standings slipped by the Iowa Chops Friday night as they were shutout in Quad City against the Flames by a score of 2-0. The Chops came out of the gate hot on the offensive, with a flurry of early scoring chances, but the Flames put up a heavy defensive front and kept the Chops from scoring, despite five power play opportunities during the game. Chops goaltender David LeNeveu had 31 saves in the loss.

Although the opening period went scoreless, it wasn't without chances for both teams. However, the goaltenders (David LeNeveu for Iowa and Leland Irving for Quad City) were equal to all the challenges. The best chance for the Chops came off the stick of forward Eric Boguniecki, who has scored three goals in his last two games, but Boguniecki was shut down by Irving and the Flames to keep things scoreless after the first 20 minutes.

The 2nd period would be another back and forth affair, with both goaltenders continuing their strong play. After a narrow miss by Iowa Chops forward Troy Bodie, the Flames then turned up the pressure with some strong shifts putting Iowa on the defensive. The pressure paid off in the game's first goal as Chris Chucko collected a loose puck in front and slid one under David LeNeveu for a 1-0 Flames lead after two periods.

The 3rd period was full of penalties, with the Flames taking three penalties in the period. The Chops' power play woes continued, with the Flames playing heavy defense on the penalty kill. The Flames were able to break through their penalty trouble and notched on a second goal, scored by Cam Cunning, leading to the Flames shutting out the Chops in the end.

The Chops will head to Milwaukee for a game against the first-place Admirals on Saturday, March 28th at 7:30pm.
