Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC - In the Royals first home game since the holiday break, fans were treated to a back-and-forth affair that would end with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Vancouver Giants on Friday night.
The Giants (14-16-4-2) and Royals were playing their third game in four nights against each other and the animosity between the two clubs showcased itself early.
Colton Langkow and Nate Misskey dropped the gloves just 30 seconds into the game, with Victoria (8-24-3-1) receiving a power play that they were unable to capitalize on to start the game.
However, after a Dylan Anderson high stick put the Royals up a man again, Kalem Parker would make no mistake, grabbing his fourth of the season to go up 1-0.
Then, leading goal scorer Jake Poole would pounce on the loose puck to rattle home is 19th of the season 13 minutes through the first.
In the second, the Giants finally burst through, firing 15 shots on Royals goaltender Braden Holt. Two of them found the back of the net, Julian Cull (1) and Mazden Leslie (7), as the game was tied at two heading into the third.
After ten minutes of back-and-forth action, Carson Haynes would give Vancouver their first lead of the game, scoring his second of the season, with just under seven to play in the frame.
That's when, less than a minute later, Teydon Trembecky would strike, taking a beautiful pass off the boards from Justin Kipke to bury his second of the season and bring the crowd of 4,165 to its feet at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena.
The rest of the third would remain scoreless, as would the five-minute overtime period, pushing the game to a shootout.
Ty Halaburda would score first for Vancouver, while Teague Patton would be stopped by Giants netminder Jesper Vikman.
After a subsequent goal from the Giants, Jake Poole would have to score to keep hopes alive, but was stopped, as Vancouver would take it 4-3.
Holt would make 30 saves in his second ever start for the Royals, after coming over in a trade with the Everett Silvertips just three days ago.
Brayden Schuurman added two assists on the night, while Poole chipped in an assist to go along with his goal.
Next up for Victoria is a trek to Kelowna to take on the 12-17-3 Rockets on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
Puck drop is set for 7:05 pm.
