Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Swift Current, SK - Despite trailing 2-0 going to the 3rd period, the Medicine Hat Tigers were able to get at least one point in a 4-3 loss in overtime to the Swift Current Broncos Saturday night.

The Broncos would take their early 2-0 lead thanks to Sam McGinley notching his 7th of the year at 10:25 of the 1st frame followed by a late first period power play goal from Josh Filmon with 36 seconds left in the period for his 22nd of the season beating Tigers goaltender Beckett Langkow (Vegreville, AB) on a one timer from the right circle.

Broncos would outshoot the Tigers 15-7 after 1.

Off to the second period where no team would score but the Tigers would create plenty of momentum heading to the third outshooting the Broncos 13-8 and the 2nd was highlighted by a spirited tilt from Tigers defenceman Rhett Parsons (Cremona, AB) & Adam McNutt.

Off to the third period and the Tigers were finally able to solve Broncos' goaltender Reid Dyck as Brayden Boehm (Nanaimo, BC) would re-direct an Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) one-timer on the power play just 1:50 into the 1st to make it a 2-1 Bronco lead.

Special teams would once again make pay dirt for the Tigers as Brenden Lee (Seattle, WA) would take a Bronco turnover shorthanded beating Dyck for his 20th of the season and tying the game at 2-2 at 9:22. Medicine Hat would take their first lead a little bit later in the 3rd with 6:50 left in regulation as Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) was denied on a breakaway but captain Owen MacNeil (Calgary, AB) would bury an eventual rebound for his 6th of the season to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

But the Tigers couldn't hold the lead as Brady Birnie would score on a loose puck in front of the Tigers net just 1:02 later to force overtime.

In the extra frame Filmon would score his second of the night and the New Jersey Devils draft pick would help lead the Tigers to the 4-3 win with 1:36 left in overtime.

With the loss the Tigers are 13-18-5-1 on the campaign just one point back of the Broncos for 8th in the Eastern Conference Playoff race.

The Tigers special teams ended up 1/2 on the power play and 2/3 on the penalty kill but were able to get their 6th shorthanded goal of the season thanks to Brenden Lee.

Next up for the Orange & Black is a trip up to Edmonton for their 3rd meeting of the year against the Oil Kings on January 6th followed by their return home to Co-op Place January 7th against the very same Broncos they faced on New Year's Eve.
