EVERETT, Wash. - The Portland Winterhawks' special teams led the way, potting two short-handed goals and a powerplay tally en route to a 5-1 win over the Everett Silvertips Friday night.
Nicholas Johnson opened the scoring for Portland, scoring the only goal of the first period at 11:26. Portland extended their lead 2:27 into the second period as James Stefan beat netminder Tyler Palmer blocker-side for his ninth of the season.
Kyle Chyzowski would add a short-handed goal at 5:20 in the second to give Portland a three-goal advantage.
Everett would strike back at 17:35, as Jackson Berezowski potted a powerplay goal- his 19th of the season and 101st career tally. The goal catapults Berezowski to sole possession of fifth place on the franchise all-time goal-scoring list, passing former NHLer Shane Harper. He sits just 11 behind Patrick Bajkov for the franchise record.
Ryan McCleary tacked on a short-handed goal in the third period, while Robbie Fromm-Delorme added a powerplay marker for a 5-1 final.
Everett boasted its biggest crowd of the season, welcoming 7,963 fans through the gate at Angel of the Winds.
The Silvertips rematch the Portland Winterhawks tomorrow night in the Rose City with live coverage beginning at 4:30 p.m. on KRKO Radio. The team returns to Everett Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13 and 14. Tickets are available.
