The Story:
Three-point nights from James Stefan and Luca Cagnoni and 31 saves from Jan Špunar helped the Winterhawks (25-4-2-1) roll past the Everett Silvertips (16-16-1-0) 5-1 on Friday night.
With the win, Portland has won seven consecutive contests and has points in nine straight (8-0-1-0). Špunar also stretched his personal win streak to four games.
Portland opened the scoring midway through the opening frame with a goal from its fourth line, as Luke Schelter combined with Diego Buttazzoni to set up Nicholas Johnson on the back door for his second career goal. Carrying their lead into the second period, the Hawks quickly doubled it as Alex Thompson and Cagnoni forced a turnover in the neutral zone, which Stefan then picked up and wired into the top corner off the rush at 2:27. Three minutes later, Portland made it 3-0 on Kyle Chyzowski's ninth of the year - as Cagnoni fired the puck down the ice on the penalty kill, Marcus Nguyen swooped in to retrieve it and found Chyzowski alone in front to chip home a backhander.
Everett tallied late in the second period with Jackson Berezowski netting his 19th of the year, but the Hawks cruised through the third period with two more markers. Ryan McCleary finished off a 2-on-0 with James Stefan to make it 4-1 midway through, then Robbie Fromm-Delorme hammered home a rebound on the power play seven minutes later to cap off a 5-1 win.
Portland and Everett face off in a New Year's Eve rematch at the VMC tomorrow at 5:00 P.M.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"The biggest thing for us tonight is that we played a full 60. We were good all throughout the game. I feel like we came right back after they scored and we were never hard on ourselves and were able to get the game back. It was a fun game."
Winterhawks forward James Stefan
