Veteran Defencman Rewarded for Career Year

The St. John's Maple Leafs announced today that the American Hockey League has named defenceman Nathan Dempsey to the League's Second All-Star Team.

Dempsey has been enjoying a career year since joining the Maple Leafs in 1994-95. He is currently fourth in team scoring with 55 points (11G,44A) in 69 games, setting new career highs for points and assists in a season, and he leads all Maple Leaf defencemen in points, goals and assists. He has also been among the AHL's leaders in scoring for defencemen and currently leads all defencemen in assists. Dempsey, for the second consecutive year, was also selected to play for the Canadian AHL All-Star Team for this year's Assante & Baker Hughes AHL All-Star Classic, held at Mile One Stadium in St. John's. He has appeared in three games with Toronto this season.

The Spruce Grove, AB native is the club's All-Time leader in seasons played (8), games played (500) and assists (191) and is second All-Time in franchise scoring (250).

Dempsey, who was drafted with the Maple Leafs' 11th choice, 245th overall in 1992, becomes the ninth Maple Leaf to be named to the AHL's Year End All-Star Teams joining Felix Potvin (1992-First Team), Joel Quenneville (1992-Second Team), Jeff Serowik (1993-Second Team), Chris Snell (1994-First Team), Rich Chernomaz (1994-First Team), Patrik Augusta (Second Team-1994), Jamie Heward (1996-First Team), David Cooper (1998-Second Team) and Bobby House (2001-Second Team).
