Mallards Slip by Hogs Yet Again
March 29, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill. The Rockford IceHogs will have to wait until next season to release their built up frustration against the Quad City Mallards. The Hogs came up short yet again against the Mallards, as Rockford closed out its home portion of the 2001-02 season with a 5-4 loss in front of a franchise-record 7,420 fans.
Quad City used a strong third period to erase a 3-2 third period deficit. Center Kevin St. Jacques began the flurry by beating Rockford goalie Steve Debus at 7:04 of the third. Winger Hugo Proulx gave the Mallards the lead at 11:22, and center Patrick Nadeau supplied some QC insurance with a power play goal at 14:23.
Hogs center Jeremy Vokes closed the Mallards lead to 5-4 with a goal at 17:24. Rockford, however, could not get another goal by goaltender Joe Dimaline, who finished the contest with 40 saves.
Winger Brian McCullough put Quad City on the board mid-way through the first period, scoring at 10:51. Rookie forward Jesse Rooney added to the lead with his tally at 13:40. The IceHogs next retaliated at 19:13 when Dan Davies cut the lead to 2-1.
The second period belonged to Rockford as center Jeff Antonovich notched his team leading 33rd goal at 4:09 of the second period. Winger David Hoogsteen gave the Hogs their only lead of the game with his power play marker at 14:28. Debus finished the night with 33 saves and his first loss in eight games. Debus entered the game with a Rockford franchise record seven-game winning streak. The IceHogs finished the season series with the Mallards 0-13-1. Defenseman Jeff DaCosta, who earlier in the night was named team MVP, extended his point streak to five games with an assist on Antonovich's goal.
Next Game: Saturday, March 30 vs. Missouri River Otters at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. Game time is set for 7:15 p.m. The Hogs wrap up their third season on the road with their 17th game against the River Otters.
