Rookie Gets Call-Up While Kwiatkowski Returns to Griffins

Grand Rapids, MI - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Friday announced that the Ottawa Senators have recalled right wing Josh Langfeld on an emergency basis and have canceled the emergency recall of defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski, returning him to the Griffins.

Langfeld, 24, receives his first call-up to the Senators as a replacement for Martin Havlat, who sustained a groin injury in Ottawa's 4-3 loss to Florida last night. The former Michigan Wolverine currently ranks among the Griffins' leaders with 21 goals (T2nd) and 37 points (3rd) in 67 games, and his team-leading eight power play goals tie for third among AHL rookies.

The native of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, scored the game-winning goal for Grand Rapids in each of its last two wins, a 4-3 victory at Milwaukee one week ago and a 3-2 triumph over Wilkes-Barre last Saturday. Langfeld, the Senators' third choice in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, joins the Griffins' three other 20-goal scorers in the NHL: Ottawa's Petr Schastlivy (22) and Chris Bala (21), and Kip Miller (21) of the New York Islanders. Langfeld will arrive in Ottawa tonight and will be available for the Senators tomorrow when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Last Sunday, the 25-year-old Kwiatkowski earned his second recall of the season, and he received more than 14 minutes of ice time in each of three Senators games this week. He has now appeared in 11 games with Ottawa this year, registering 12 penalty minutes and a plus-five rating. This season, the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native has played 59 games with the Griffins, recording eight goals, 15 assists and 86 penalty minutes. Kwiatkowski is expected to be in the Griffins' lineup tonight when they face the Milwaukee Admirals in an 8:30 p.m. start at the Bradley Center.
