Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers greeted the 2012 calendar year with a bang, as they welcomed the Cincinnati Cyclones to WesBanco Arena. Chris Barton and Paul Crowder each posted three-point nights, while Peter Delmas made 29 saves, leading the Nailers to a 5-2 victory.
The contest got off to a blazing start in the opening period, as the two teams combined to put five goals on the board. Wheeling opened the scoring just 1:25 into the game, as Chris Barton took a drop pass from Paul Crowder, and beat Brad Fogal on his stick side. Less than five minutes later, the Nailers added to the lead. Scooter Vaughan took a cross-ice pass from Barton, and sent a backhander into the net for his first professional goal. Chris Cahill's shot from the right circle brought the Cyclones within one at the midway mark of the period, before Barton netted his second of the period, sliding in a shot from the left wing wall. With less than one minute remaining in the frame, Matt Pelech connected on a cross-crease pass from Jonathan Hazen, making the score 3-2 in favor of the home team.
After a scoreless second period, the Nailers added to their lead with 7:40 remaining in regulation. Paul Crowder won an offensive zone face-off to Cody Chupp, who wired in a wrist shot from the outside of the left circle. Matt Lombardi put the exclamation point on Wheeling's victory at the 18:15 mark of the third, as his empty net marker was assisted by Adam Ross.
Peter Delmas earned the win in his first appearance since December 16th, making 29 saves on 31 shots. Brad Fogal took the loss for Cincinnati, stopping 38 of the 42 shots he faced.
