Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Rookie Chris Barton had a three-point night as he helped the Wheeling Nailers (19-10-1-1) defeat the Cincinnati Cyclones (14-10-0-3) by a 5-2 final score in front of 2,752 at WesBanco Arena on Friday night. The loss snapped Cincinnati's season-high six-game winning streak.

The Nailers raced out to a 2-0 lead early in the opening period; at the 1:25 mark Chris Barton sent a wrist shot past Cyclones goalie Brad Fogal (L, 38 saves, 1-1-0) to make it 1-0. Then, at 6:19, Scooter Vaughn raced down the wing and backhanded a shot into the net to give his team the two-goal cushion. Cincinnati answered back at 9:43 as Chris Cahill potted his third goal in as-many games to pull the Cyclones within a tally at 2-1. Wheeling, however, would pull back out by two when Barton tipped home his second lamplighter of the night at 13:24 to give his team a 3-1 advantage. In the final minutes, though, Cincinnati's power play struck as Mike Pelech finished off a tremendous power play shift for his fifth goal of the year, making it 3-2 Wheeling after 20 minutes of play.

After a scoreless middle frame, the Cyclones were given a five-on-three man-advantage but were unable to cash in. That proved to be the turning point as just a few minutes later, at the 12:20 mark, Cody Chupp buried his eighth of the season to extend Wheeling's lead to 4-2. In the final minutes, Cincinnati pulled the goalie in hopes of mounting a comeback but Matt Lombardi grabbed a loose puck at neutral ice and stashed the empty net goal for a 5-2 Nailers edge. Wheeling held on to win by the same score.
